The Econometrics Phase is the pillar of the Quantum Score that measures where an economy sits in its cycle and which direction the data is moving, is activity accelerating or decelerating, and is the news flow improving or deteriorating.

Beginner

What It Means

Every economy moves through cycles: expansion, peak, slowdown, recovery. This pillar answers two questions at once. Where in the cycle is this economy, and is the incoming data getting better or worse?

Example

Two economies can both be growing at the same rate. In one, each new data release beats the last and momentum is building. In the other, growth is positive but every release is a little weaker than the one before. The level is the same; the phase is opposite, and markets price the direction of travel, not just the level.

Why It Matters

The same asset deserves a different price in an accelerating economy than in a slowing one. Cycle position drives earnings, defaults, and policy, the fundamental forces beneath every market.

Advanced

How to Read It

A strong Econometrics Phase reading means the economic backdrop is a tailwind: data momentum is positive and the cycle position favors the asset. A weak reading means the fundamentals are working against the position even if price action still looks healthy.

Common Misreadings

  • Confusing level with momentum: a strong economy with deteriorating data can read weaker than a soft economy with improving data, the pillar rewards direction, which is what moves prices
  • Expecting it to time markets: economic data turns slowly; this pillar frames the fundamental backdrop rather than triggering entries and exits

Reading It Against the Other Pillars

Compare this pillar with the price-behavior pillar. A rising market alongside weakening fundamentals highlights a difference between current economic conditions and the expectations reflected in prices. The reports use that divergence to frame the next research question. The economic surprise index is a closely related read: it tracks data against expectations, while this pillar tracks the cycle itself.
